Weight loss
Unexpected weight loss can have many causes and is an issue we pay close attention to in our practice specializing in gastrointestinal diseases. Weight loss means that you lose weight without conscious effort, such as dieting or increased physical activity. While many people may view weight loss as a positive, unexplained weight loss can be an indication of an underlying health issue.
What is meant by unexpected weight loss?
Unexpected weight loss is when you lose more than 5% of your body weight in less than six months, without this being due to a change in your diet or level of exercise. For example, it would be unexpected if someone who weighs 70 kg loses 3.5 kg or more in six months without trying.
Possible causes of unexpected weight loss
The reasons for unwanted weight loss can be varied and range from simple to more complex health problems. Some common causes include:
- Digestive problems: Diseases such as coeliac disease, chronic inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis) or impaired nutrient absorption can lead to weight loss.
- Infections: Prolonged infections can weaken the body and contribute to weight loss.
- Metabolic diseases: Diabetes and hyperthyroidism are examples of metabolic disorders that can cause weight loss.
- Psychological factors: Stress, depression and eating disorders can also lead to significant weight loss.
When should you see a doctor?
It is important to consult a doctor if you notice unexplained weight loss, especially if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as fatigue, changes in bowel movements, fever or pain. A timely visit to the doctor makes it possible to determine the causes and initiate appropriate treatment.
How is the cause of weight loss diagnosed?
To diagnose the cause of your weight loss, your doctor will first take a thorough medical history and ask you about your eating habits, lifestyle and any changes in your health. This is usually followed by physical examinations and possibly blood tests, stool examinations or imaging procedures to support the diagnosis.
Treatment of unwanted weight loss
Treatment depends on the underlying cause. In some cases, it may be sufficient to adjust dietary habits or compensate for specific nutrient deficiencies. Other conditions, such as hyperthyroidism or inflammatory bowel disease, may require drug therapies or further specialized treatment.
