pH-metry & impedance pH-metry
Long-term pH-metry can be used to determine whether there is an increased reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus, which can lead to heartburn, among other things. In addition, impedance pH measurement can be used to register increased regurgitation of air and non-acidic stomach contents.
Procedure of the examination
For both measurements, a thin probe is inserted through the nose into the throat and into the esophagus. At the tip of these probes is a pH sensor that registers the extent of acid reflux over 24 hours. The probe is connected to a small recording device that is worn comfortably by the patient during the examination. The examination is carried out on an outpatient basis.
pH-metry and impedance pH-metry are important techniques for the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease.
