Esophageal manometry
Esophageal manometry is a pressure measurement in the esophagus using a special probe. This examination is mainly carried out to clarify a swallowing disorder (dysphagia).
Procedure of the examination
During this examination, the probe is inserted into the throat via a nostril and pushed further into the esophagus and stomach while swallowing.
The examination is painless, although inserting the probe through the nose can be uncomfortable. The examination is carried out in a sitting position. The pressure of the lower and upper oesophageal sphincter is measured as well as oesophageal function when swallowing small amounts of water or solid food. This allows the swallowing act to be analyzed precisely.
The examination takes about 30 minutes.
